Welcome to Way of Canadian

I wish I could say that I’ve always made a real effort to shop Canadian-made, but more often than not—say getting home realizing some of my groceries are from Canada—I’ve been happy when it happens, but have made limited effort to consciously do so beyond attending craft sales knowing I’m supporting local makers. With all the talk of tariffs, it really did seem like the right time (better late than never) to take a look at my purchasing habits.

I’ve always loved design of all sorts. I’m a professional graphic designer by training who loves branding, illustration, typography and environmental design. I’ve had a life-long passion for interior design and decorating— probably thanks to my unofficial training having grown up with a cabinetmaker dad who built us toys as kids, furniture, and now a kitchen and built-ins I design for my home, and a mom with a keen eye for interior design who often redesigned and redecorated spaces in our home.

In 2018, just before the price of homes skyrocketed, I moved from my bachelor apartment in Toronto back to my hometown in Ottawa where I was able to buy a home which meant I had lots of additional space to design and decorate. My home ownership has only further fueled my obsession with interior design, and keeps me on the hunt for unique pieces to add to my space.

With a renewed sense of pride in Canada, and inspired by so many Canadians changing their shopping habits to support our economy, I want to make this the year where I start paying more attention to where I shop and what I’m buying, and make a real effort to spend all that pretty paper coloured money right here in Canada.

With my addiction to interiors and a desire to learn more about home goods made in Canada, the idea for Way of Canadian was born. I’ve created this site to share makers and products I discover, and showcase them in spaces I design for inspiration. Our new way of life is shopping Canadian as much as possible. It’s the Way of Canadian. Bookmark this site and follow along on instagram at @wayofcanadian to learn about our Canadian makers with me.
